PhD Opportunity in Inverse Problems and Imaging

One PhD studentship in “Applications of Inverse Problems in Smart Manufacturing”, as part of Science Foundation Ireland's Research Centre for Smart Manufacturing CONFIRM and the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, University of Limerick (UL).

We are seeking one PhD candidate in the area of inverse problems and imaging. The PhD will be funded by CONFIRM, Science Foundation Ireland’s Research Centre for Smart Manufacturing, based at UL. The successful candidate will start as soon as possible and no later than September 2019.

The goal of the project is to employ inverse problems and imaging techniques for non-destructive testing of materials to help detect material defects (e.g., cracks or inclusions) and improve manufacturing processes. The successful candidate will have a strong background in mathematics (including mathematical analysis and partial differential equations). Experience in inverse problems or ill-posed problems would be an advantage but is not necessary.

As part of CONFIRM, the student will be expected to engage and interact with the other CONFIRM PhD students and share their knowledge with each other. The student will also be expected to interact with the CONFIRM operations team in addition to their supervisors. The student will be embedded in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at UL and will benefit from the excellent research support structure through MACSI (Mathematics Applications Consortium for Science and Industry).

The studentship is for four years, it includes EU fees and an annual stipend of €18,500. To apply, please send a letter explaining how you fit the criteria above, along with a CV, by email to or Consideration of applications will continue until the position is filled.
