Confidentiality and Consent

     1.      Confidentiality Agreement

The service is strictly confidential and operates within the terms of confidentiality as laid down by the Irish Association of University of College Counsellors (IAUCC)’s Code of Ethics and Practice. This means that your personal details are not disclosed to anyone outside of the service without your permission. Where you give specific consent, we may liaise with other individuals or agencies to support your care. There are some exceptional circumstances in which we may need to breach this confidentiality: harm to self, harm to others and issues concerning child protection. If the counsellor believes that you or someone else is in danger of serious harm then, after discussion with you, they may take steps to minimise this danger.

We maintain case notes on all clients. These are stored on a password protected database, on a locked computer, in a locked office. Your details will be kept on file, anonymously, for statistical and research purposes only.

     2.      Conditions of the Service


Accessing the Service

All students, new and returning, must initially attend one of the drop-in centres to access the service. The service runs two drop-in centres daily during term time, from 10am – 11am and 2pm – 3pm. During the drop-in centre, you will meet with one of our assistant psychologists for a brief discussion about how you are doing and what supports are available to you. Following this, you will be emailed an individualised support plan. This support plan may include attendance at psycho-educational workshops, one-to-one counselling, referral to internal supports, or information on external supports.


Counselling Appointments

The service gets very busy, especially during term, and we often have a waiting list for counselling. Every effort will be made to see you as soon as possible. While waiting, you are welcome to avail of the drop-in centre as often as you need. As soon as an appointment becomes available, you will be called on the contact number provided and offered an appointment. It is imperative that you inform us if your contact details change. Please save our number, 061-202327, in your phone so you know it is us calling.


Students will be allocated an appointment with the first available counsellor. Requests for specific counsellors cannot be accommodated. Requests to see a counsellor of a particular gender will be considered on merit.

Cancellation Policy

If you are unable to attend your scheduled appointment, you must give at least 24-hr notice by calling the main office on 061-202327. If you miss an appointment without notice, you will be placed back on the waiting list.
